UFC 162 Silva vs. Weidman video highlights
At UFC 162 yesterday, Chris Weidman created history when he defeated middleweight champion Anderson Silva via TKO in the second round of their title fight main event.
Early in round one, Weidman went after Silva and found some success when he dragged the champion to the ground in the first round.
Silva then went about “clowning” his opponent, an effective tactic that he has used in many of his professional career bouts thus far. The brave strategy proved Silva’s undoing as Weidman, the savvy striker from New York elected to engage with the middleweight king in the second round and Silva was soon left unconscious on the mat at one minute, 18 seconds of the second round.
It was a devastating left hook that did the damage – as Silva pretended to be hurt by a stiff jab just seconds earlier, Weidman landed the heavy blow to Silva’s jaw that dropped the 38 year old champion, handing him his first loss in over seven years.
It was the punch heard ‘round the world and fight fans across the country were left to ponder what is next for “The Spider”.
Silva will now take some time off to consider his options – a rematch with Weidman being one of the more probably ones considering UFC president Dana White has ruled out a potential “superfight” with either Jon Jones or Georges St Pierre.
The UFC’s middleweight division has a new, undefeated ruler in Chris Weidman, a man who did what many said he couldn’t – topple the best mixed martial artist of all time.
The world now waits for Silva to consider and hopefully agree to what will undoubtedly be the biggest fight in MMA history, a rematch with newly-crowned champion Chris Weidman.
