Penrith's James Te Huna (16-6) will face mixed martial arts legend Maurcio 'Shogun' Rua (21-8) in the co-main event of Brisbane's UFC fight card on December 7, 2013.

Te Huna first called out the Brazilian after defeating Canadian Ryan Jimmo in February, but 'Shogun' was instead matched up with Chael Sonnen at UFC Fight Night on August 18.

Te Huna stepped in as a late replacement for Ryan Bader against Glover Teixeira at UFC 160 but like 'Shogun', suffered a first round submission defeat to his opponent.

UFC announces return to Australia

With both light heavyweights coming off a loss, the time is right for the savy strikers to collide in the Octagon in what is a salivating match-up for Australian MMA fans.

The fight was announced this morning by The Daily Telegraph and later confirmed to MMA Kanvas by the UFC.

The long-rumoured bout is an excellent addition to what will be a fight card stacked with local talent in Brisbane, as Te Huna joins heavyweight Mark Hunt as the night's top attraction.

Not since welterweight BJ Penn featured in the main event of UFC 127 in 2011 has a true MMA legend visited our shores to compete. As a former PRIDE and UFC light heavyweight champion, 'Shogun' is also held in that high regard and will prove a stiff test for the powerful and dynamic striker, New Zealand born JamesTe Huna.
